SS304 vs SS316 Stainless Steel Wire Rope Cable: Which Grade Should You Choose?

Ask ten riggers which stainless steel wire rope cable to buy, and most will start with the same question: 304 or 316? The two grades look identical on a coil, but they behave very differently once salt, chemicals or years of weather get involved.

This guide explains what separates SS304 from SS316, where each one belongs, and how to decide without overspending or under-specifying.

The Core Difference: Molybdenum

Both grades are stainless steel and both form a passive chromium oxide layer that protects the surface and heals itself when scratched. The difference is that SS316 adds molybdenum, which noticeably improves resistance to pitting caused by chlorides.

Chlorides are found in seawater, coastal air, de-icing salts and pool chemicals. That is why grade selection is often the biggest factor in how long a stainless steel wire rope cable lasts in the field.

SS304 Wire Rope: Where It Works Well

SS304 is a reliable, cost-effective choice for:

  • Indoor architectural cable railing and stair balustrades

  • Machine guarding and safety barrier cable

  • Control cable and mechanical linkages

  • General industrial cable in dry or moderately exposed conditions

  • Tensioned fencing in non-coastal environments

If the rope will not meet salt or chlorinated water, SS304 usually delivers what the job needs at a lower cost.

SS316 / 316L Wire Rope: Where It Is Worth It

SS316 is the standard recommendation wherever chlorides are involved:

  • Sailboat and yacht standing and running rigging

  • Dock lines, guardrails and mooring assemblies

  • Aquaculture cage cable

  • Deck and walkway lifeline cable

  • Swimming pool fencing and other chlorinated environments

  • Coastal architectural railing

  • Wash-down areas in industrial plants

In these settings, 316 is not an optional upgrade. It is what most marine surveyors expect to see.

Does the Price Difference Matter?

SS316 costs more than SS304, but the gap is usually small compared with the cost of the whole project. Consider a coastal railing installation: the rope is a small part of the total cost, while the labour to remove and replace corroded cable is not. This is why marine surveyors tend to default to 316 near any water exposure rather than debating it case by case.

Can SS316 Still Stain?

Yes. Even 316 is not fully immune. Under constant salt spray it can develop a light surface bloom, which is cosmetic rather than structural. Simple habits keep the rope close to the performance promised on its mill certificate:

  • Rinse off salt, dust and chemical residue regularly

  • Inspect terminations at every check

  • Look for broken wires or flattened sections, especially near sheaves

Grade Is Only Half the Decision

Once you have chosen a grade, choose the construction by how the rope will move:

  • 1x19: Rigid, minimal stretch, best for cable railing and static rigging

  • 7x7: Balanced, suited to general industrial use

  • 7x19: Highly flexible, built for sheaves and tight radii

Drawmet Wires supplies both grades in all three constructions, from 1 mm to 12 mm, with intermediate sizes on request.

A Simple Way to Decide

Ask these three questions:

  1. Will the rope touch saltwater, coastal air or pool chemicals? If yes, choose SS316.

  2. Is the rope indoors or in a dry, moderate environment? SS304 is usually enough.

  3. Is the replacement cost high or access difficult? Choose SS316 for extra margin.

Don't Skip the Paperwork

Whichever grade you buy, insist on documentation. A reliable supplier will provide:

  • Dimensional checks and visual surface inspection

  • Sample breaking-load testing referenced to ASTM A492 and EN 12385

  • A heat number on every coil, linked to a mill test certificate

Also remember that safe working load is typically calculated with a 5:1 safety factor, and that fittings and terminations can reduce the assembly's capacity. For lifting, confirm ratings with the fitting manufacturer.
